TRICARE After the Disaster

As a TRICARE Prime beneficiary whose life has been profoundly disrupted by a natural disaster, you can be assured that you will be able to continue to obtain the medical care you need under the TRICARE program despite the difficulties the disaster may cause for you and your Primary Care Manager (PCM).

Emergency Referral/Authorization Procedures

Sometimes natural disasters and weather conditions necessitate the closing of military or civilian health care facilities.  These disruptions can make it impossible for you to access your Primary Care Manager (PCM).  The request and the need for urgent medical care often come on the same day.  In addition, your electronic medical claim may process within a day or two after the date of service resulting in point of service (POS) charges if a waiver of PCM referral requirements is not established.  In emergency situations retroactive waivers for PCM referrals have been granted to prevent POS charges.

Under extraordinary circumstances TRICARE will grant temporary waivers of PCM referrals and authorizations for care to ease the referral process during these hard times.  Geographic areas where waivers of PCM referrals and authorizations have been granted will be posted to this web page.

Since these temporary waivers of PCM referrals expire, you are encouraged to re-establish contact with your PCM as soon as communication is once again available.

PCM referrals are not required for beneficiaries enrolled to the following locations on the following dates:

Enrollment

If you are enrolled in TRICARE Prime and decide to relocate to a new area for an extended period of time, 30 days or more, you will need to transfer your enrollment, if you move to another TRICARE region, and change your PCM to one in your new location. You can locate a PCM in the TRICARE South Region through the Humana Military Provider Locator on the web site or by calling 1-800-444-5445.

Remember to continue to pay your monthly premium on time to avoid disenrollment.
