Preparing to Stay

You should complete all readiness actions before conditions deteriorate too much. If a disaster threatens the region, one of the most important decisions you will make is whether to stay or go.
  • Get your disaster supply kit out.  Check food, water and medical supplies.  Ensure you have flashlights, a radio and batteries.  If you don't, go to the stores immediately.

  • Put supplies in your safe room.

  • Gather tools and repair materials.

  • Fill containers with extra drinking water.

  • Fill tubs with water for sanitary use after sealing the drain with a silicone caulking that can be easily removed later.

  • Turn the refrigerator and freezer to the coldest settings.

  • Place plastic bottles or freezer bags of water in both to eliminate air pockets and help increase the length of time foods will stay safe in power fails.

  • Avoid opening the refrigerator/freezer, especially after power fails.

  • Locate the shutoffs for electricity, water and gas.

  • Bring in pets.

  • Stay calm and remain indoors.
