Parent/Caretaker Responsibilities

       
Sponsor verification of receipt of services and completion of required training is required for authorization of services, excluding the first six months of services. The verification is required once every six (6) months of services provided.

A minimum of one caregiver who is in the beneficiary’s immediate family must complete classroom and practical training in each year in which EIA services are provided under this Demonstration.

Training requirements are as follows:

  1. Children 18 months through 8 years of age:
    1. 6 hours of classroom training and 10 hours of practical training in the first year EIA services are provided under the Demonstration
    2. 6 hours of practical training during each subsequent year in which services are provided
  2. Children 9 years of age and older
    1. 6 hours of classroom training and 6 hours of practical training in the first year EIA services are provided under the Demonstration
    2. 6 hours of practical training during each subsequent year in which services are provided

Classroom training must be provided by:

  1. A United States or Canadian institution of higher education fully or provisionally accredited by a regional, state provincial or national accrediting body; or
  2. An accredited health care facility, or
  3. A private agency whose primary business activity is the delivery of services to children with ASD and whose governing board includes one or more Board Certified Behavioral Analysts; or
  4. An EIA Supervisor
  5. Waiver of the classroom training requirement is permitted when the sponsor certifies to HMHS that a parent/caregiver in the beneficiary’s immediate family has previously received classroom training in the content and to the degree required in the Demonstration.

Practical training must be provided by:

  1. An EIA Supervisor (may be reimbursed under the conditions and limitations described previously.)
  2. Waiver of practical training is permitted for caregivers who can document they:
    1. Meet the definition of an EIA Supervisor as defined in the EIA Supervisor Provider Application; or
    2. Have been approved by the Behavioral Analyst Certification Board to take the BCBA or BCABA examinations; or
    3. Have 30 hours or hands-on-training in providing services directly to children and/or adults with autism under the supervision of a Board Certified Behavioral Analyst or an individual with a minimum of a Master’s degree in Applied Behavioral Analysis and 10 years of professional experience in implementing and overseeing behavior analysis services for individuals with autism.
